Background
Our task was to make a board game that was both fun to play and incorporated chemistry. The requirements were that we had to have 3 reactions (1 single displacement, 1 double displacement, and 1 synthesis), mechanical reactions (such as the people moving the pieces), and have an LED light turn on and play a function in your game. We also had to have a blueprint of our board and safety precautions because we were dealing with chemicals.
Our Game
For our game we decided to base it off the old kids TV show, The Fairly Odd Parents. We did this because we all liked the show as kids and thought that it would make a good theme to our game. we made our board like a mind of candy land and at the end we had the fairy's wands. The instructions and other information is below.
Chemical Reactions

Double Displacement: A double displacement reaction, also known as a double replacement reaction or metathesis, is a type of chemical reaction where two compounds react, and the positive ions (cation) and the negative ions (anion) of the two reactants switch places, forming two new compounds or products. This means that if you have two compounds (AB and CD) and A and C are positive and if B and D were negative they would switch places
Single Replacement: This is a type of chemical reaction where an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in that compound. This is when you have an element (A) and a compound (BC) and they combine and the element switches with the compound to make B and AC
Synthesis Reaction: A synthesis reaction is a reaction where multiple reactants combine and form a single thing. An example of this is hydrogen and oxygen coming together and making water. Normally you need either pressure and or heat to combine the reactants.
Other Content Info.
Decomposition reaction: When a compound breaks down under heat or pressure to the base elements. So if you have a compound, AB, and it breaks down to it elements and turns back to A and B. (We didn't use this in our game even though we learned about it and studied how it worked)
cation: positively-charged ion (tend to be metals)
anion: negatively-charged ion (tend to be nonmetals)
cation: positively-charged ion (tend to be metals)
anion: negatively-charged ion (tend to be nonmetals)
Reflection
This project was very fun because we had to think out of the box to try and get everything to fit together. We had to figure out which reactions we wanted to do and where we wanted to have them. Work wise, this project started very slow because we didn't know what we wanted to have as our theme or what we wanted our reactions to be. This went on for a little bit before we came up with the idea for fairly odd parents. By then we were behind by a bit and we worked very hard to get everything done and make our game fun and functional. I wish that i was here for more of the project because i was sick for most of the time, but the time that i was there it was a very fun project to work on and collaborate with my group mates.
One of the peaks of this project was when we finally thought of a theme because then everything fell into place very smoothly with the reactions and the workings of the game. The second peak is when we played it for the first time because we were finally able to see our game work and the reactions go in the way that we wanted them to
One of the major negatives of this project was just the fact that i wasn't there to see the game develop and contribute more to the game as a whole. This was a big down side because i didn't really know what was going on with our game and had to be caught up on it right at the end with led to some confusion but it all worked out in the end.
